I think it all depends on the average conditions you race in. In our fall regattas we have very light winds 2-8 knots. My J/80 has a 155% 3DL which is a blast in those conditions, especially with flat water. You still need to race well in clean air tough. We are very, very competitive despite our IRC TCC is 0.986.

We race under IRC and rate 0.971 with 100% jib, in 'class'. I decided to rate without our 140% as the rating would have killed us in most conditions, with a potential rating of 0.980 or so.
We recently won a Regatta for the first time under our new IRC rules, so I would say that, yes, the J80 is competitive under this. But on upwind / downwind courses with a mixed fleet we have to sail very well indeed...

Has anybody raced a J80 under IRC? If so what handicap does it have for a) 100% jib and b) 155%/135% genoa? Is the J80 competitive under IRC?
