I just purchased a new J80 #493. So far the only question I have is how to attach a mooring/anchor line to the boat. I see some hefty looking chocks on the bow but no deck cleat to attach the line. Instead I see an upside down rectangular u-shaped bracket about where I thought I should see a cleat. This bracket looks rather flimsy. What is this bracket for and if it is to fasten the mooring/anchor line how do most owners do this? A bowline? I contacted the dealer and asked this question. I received the following response form Jim Johnston:"There are no mooring cleats on the J/80. The bow has an eye and the stern has two large U Bolts for the spinnaker sheets and stern lines. The original boats did have bow cleats but they kept getting caught on the spin sheets and tack line. Therefore, the eye seems to work much better."
Well, I am still uncertain. I do not see a bow eye unless this u-shaped bracket is the bow eye. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks, Andre Doyon

For short-term belaying in protected harbors, we tie directly to the bow eye that Andre describes, using a bowline or a series of half-hitches. For extended belaying, towing, or anchoring, we pass the line through the bow eye and tie around the mast with a bowline. In all situations, the line should be something with shock-absorbing capabilities (stretch) like nylon, and should first be led through a bow chock.

We have been mooring our J80 for seven seasons and have done pretty much as Steve describes. We use a pretty hefty 5/8" mooring line and secure it to that bow "cleat" with a couple of half-hitches. A couple of times during storms and once during a hurricane I added a second line passing through the other bow chock, through the bow cleat, and then to the mast. The bow cleat took the strain and did not fail.

For towing, by this I mean 6 miles at 15-17kts, I recommend a split line, running one side through each chock, back through the cleat, and then to the winches. The reason I use the winches is that I can quickly cast off if the need arises.

I agree with you. When I got my boat, the first thing I did was to install a proper cleat at the front and 2 cleats aft, so I can use the spliced mooring lines in the pen.

When istalling the front cleat make sure you have it in the structure and not just the foam.

If you keen on OD you better check if this is allowed or not.

I did it anyway and I never have proplems with the spinaker, it also handy if you need a tow.
