Lifting Straps Advise

Need some advise

I want to use the boat lift at the club to lift the boat out of the water. I never did it before and I can not find any straps. All I have is a piece of stainless steel with 2 wholes big enough to fit over the 2 bolts at the end of the bilge Keel.

Can anybody tell me what I need to get, who you do it, if you need bridels for stability and what rating the strap needs to be.

Good advise much appreciated

Most people use a simple six foot lifting strap. Such a strap, rated at 6400lbs - 5,000 in the "choker" configuration as used to lift a J80, is available from Northern Hydraulics, 800-533-5545, Item# 15006, $25.

I've used a five foot strap. It works but is difficult to stabilize (see below) and can make a mess when the hoist is greasy.

As you know, the strap attaches to the lifting bar on the keel bolts. The boat then needs to be stabilized against pitching and rolling. I have tried and seen others use several methods over the years with various degrees of success. They all envolve at least two and some as many as four lines to stabilize the boat.

At the 1999 NAs in Annapolis the guy who ran the boatyard showed us what I consider the simplest and best method. It has always worked flawlessly:

Using two nylon docklines, fasten each one to the stanchion bases alongside the cabinhouse p/s. Run the ends through the loop in the strap and back to the p/s winches. Once the strap is tensioned by the hoist, put medium tension on the two lines and tie off. Make sure the strap is tensioned before the stabilizing lines and that the stabilizing lines are nylon (not low-stretch line) so that you don't end up lifting the boat by the stanchions.

Just one question. How do you attach the lifting bar to the two bolts. Just 2 nuts and washers or do you need somethings more fancy?

Mine came already attached. Don't know if your bar is the same, or even if your boat is a TPI or French. In the TPI, the bar is about 1/2" thick and maybe 1" wide and is bolted to the two keel bolts just under the companionway ladder. btw - the ladder has to be swung away from the companionway for lifting.
