Please could someone clarify to me what the rules are for crew changes at a class regatta. Obviously there is a weight limit but it allowable to have subsitute(s) within that weight limit?

Reason for asking is not about hand picking from a squad team of light wind and strong wind specialists - but more along the lines of "wife wishes to go shopping" at times of races 3, 7 & 9...can a substitute be used to accommodate a crew that wishes to do more than yacht racing during a weekend/week's racing

Any idea how this might apply to the world's in La Rochelle?

Many Thanks,

our class rules require that you sail at or below 745 Lbs for a class event. You can substitute crew members as long as you stay at or below 745. I would suggest refering to the race instructions for the event. Usually it will be required that you notify the comittee in writing and if applicable weigh in on the class scale.

Generally the intent of restricting crew changes during an event is to prevent abuse of the system by optimizing crew weight based on daily conditions. If the crew change is known ahead of time and the replacement crew is similar in weight, I would think you would not have trouble getting approval to do so. Obviously injury or illness could force an unplanned change...

I am not sure as to what the rules will be for the event, but often regattas have substitutions only in emergencies and the substituted for crew member is not allowed back on board for the duration of the regatta.

I am think that the previous worlds were held under these stipulations. I know that I looked into it because one of our crew was not sure if he would be available all days.

Will crew substitutions be allowed at Key West? What were the rules in previous Key West Regattas?
