I am working on #341, it's a 2001, left in fresh water in the summer, trailered outside in the winter. bottom is west barrier coat and VC17. About 3 yrs ago we saw cracks in the top of the keel. It's in the sump area height wize above the transition to lead.

I started with a small die grinder to find the bottom and found delamination in the brown colored glass.

In layers going down i found faring compound, gelcoat, green fiberglass then brown fiberglass. i think i have removed all the delaminated material. As you can see from the photos, it's a very irregular area. I traced the cracks with a sharpie to see better in the photos.

3 questions, 1- what is going on here? others have experience?
2. what is the material used in the various layers for construction? Most fiberglass i have seen is green in color.
3. Any advice on the repair?

Any chance your boat's bilge had water in it and then froze?

I have a J80 which has some similar spider looking cracks. I also have a crack in the cosmetic band which goes around the join in the keel / sump.

The vertical tabbing between floors 2 & 3 has separated on the port side only. Rest of the tabbing looks fine. From what i have sanded off so far i don't see any crazing or delamination once i sanded off the gel coat.

On my keel i have fibreglass, gelcoat, any fairing compounded that was needed then interprotect then VC17. The keel is lead then fairing compound then interprotect then VC17

Thanks, looks like the green stuff if the "cosmetic wrap" at the transition between keel and the stub. the brown stuff must be the scrimp. problem is in the scrimp, so that doesn't bode well for the process.

I patched it. Looks great. it was poor construction on the belly band. I'm not sure it really hurt anything to be cracked, but nice to have it fixed.

I squared off the area to make the glass patches easier to cut.

One lesson learned is clean off the vc17 in the area you are working in and tape off the area outside. Stuff smears all over and contaminated and discolored repair area.
