My J80 (2000 model year hull # 276)came from the factory with a Forespar telescoping tiller extension (I believe the equivalent current Forespar model is 108101 (extends from 27-48 inches).
I am thinking of replacing it with a fixed non-telescoping model. These are made by a few manufacturers such as Ronstan #RF3129, 33 inches. I know J World in Annapolis uses fixed length tiller extensions so I think this should work.
One concern I have is that Ronstan recommends #RF3129 for "dinghys and small catamarans", but says nothing about keelboats. I wonder whether the unit and method of attachment to the tiller handle (which appears less robust than the Forespar unit) are strong enough to handle a blow.

Also, I wonder what is the ideal length? 33 inches sounds about right to me.

Advice, suggestions welcome.

I'm always impressed at how helpful and timely this forum can be!

For anyone interested, I decided on the Ronstan #RF3129 fixed tiller extension (brand name "Battlestick"). At 33 inches, the length is fine. I prefer it to the OE Forespar telescoping unit.
