I have J80 384. During the past season (3 months of sailing an average 2 days each week in very moderate conditions at Huntington Lake Ca) we have developed significant surface cracks at the top of the trunk.

There is also a crack in the starboard side at what looks like the sump to keel joint about a foot down from the hull.

We jacked the boat up on the trailer using the trailer pads and attempted to flex the keel and it does not move from side to side even with aggressive pushing. Also, there is no sign of any cracks, or flex inside the sump.

I realize I need to have a professional look at this, the issue is that I want someone schooled by J boats or at least familiar with the J80 Keel issues.

We are located in Fresno California and there are no boat yards here. I need a referral to a J-Boat authorized repair facility, someone like Gulf Coast Composites, somewhere out here in the west...preferably from San Francisco Bay area, however, Southern California would also work for us.

I need to install a fathometer in my boat, and I am curious of anyone has done this, without using a thru hull transducer, I.E. without cutting a hole in the hull. Has anyone done this, and if so,where is the best place to place it? Some instruments claim to be able to "shoot thru" the glass hull.

on the stbd side of the mast step is a solid glass patch for mounting or drilling for a transducer; ( you can see it clearly by lightly sanding away the interior paint) i epoxeied mine there and it lasted a few years, but more recently cleaned it and reaffixed it with 4200.

yes, , but it stops working when the seal gets broken. Clean it then reaffix.

BTW, do you have to sand off the paint to make it work, or can you just stick it to the painted surface?

Not sure, it only took a light sanding and i felt there would be less chances for air gaps to form
