I hope some of the Texas sailors can help me on this one. I have been lurking on this site for a couple of weeks now. I am very interested in the J80. however, I am concerned that the conditions in Corpus Christi bay may not be the best for this boat.

we are blessed in Corpus with 15 - 20 wind pretty much every day. Not surprisingly, we also have a short stiff chop.

If I get the J80, I will have to race PHRF locally since there is only one other boat in the area. Can the boat handle and be competitive in these conditions?

We ran a circuit stop at CCYC last year that was a huge success. We will be there again in June. The boat handled the conditions just fine, though the spinnaker work required experienced crew. PHRF performance would depend a lot on what types of boats would be in your class. Upwind will obviously be a struggle if sailing against heavier boats that can punch through the chop, but you should leave them in the dust off the wind!
