Motor for j80

i am a brand new j80 owner that... sigh... alas must consider uglying the transom with a stinky. does anyone have a recommendation on engine size, make, etc. i am really not sure what to get, i have been told that 3.5hp is enough, but have been also told to go as high as 5hp so i won't be frustrated. - comments anyone?

If your boat is light I would get the 5 HP.
That is what I have and I like having a reverse
gear also,
The 3.5 is fine unless you get in heavy air and
need to motor very far.

A 3.5hp will have a hard time moving the boat upwind in big waves. If you only motor in protected waters it will work fine, and is nice and light to handle. I have a 5hp with reverse and can motor in any conditions. As Greg implies, motor can be counted toward sailing weight, so a bigger one will let you carry less corrector weight if your boat is light. I also recommend a "Hall" style motor mount to keep the prop clear of the rudder and reduce vibration under power.

a hall style mount - is that the bracket that set's the motor off the transom about 5 inches? i think j is shipping them standard on new models?

This one works great too. You can adjust the hieght of the motor to keep it in the water in big swells.

Can anyone confirm if new boats are being shipped with motor mounts? We installed a Hall mount on Gostosa, after a less expensive and lighter mount sheared off and dropped our motor in the lake. I was concerned we may need to take off the mount for weigh-in at North Americans??

Hi Jeff.

New boats *are* coming with an outboard bracket. I saw one on the line at TPI's open house last month (#719 I think). The 3 new boats sitting in front of Fay's also have the brackets.

I asked TPI about adding one to older boats and this is what customer service said (despite lots of folks like you having done a retrofit):


Unfortunately the motor bracket
is not retrofit able. Before
the deck goes down we install a
block to the hull to support the bracket.

If it is "permanently" attached, I see no reason why you would have to remove the motor mount for weighing the boat at the N.A.'s.

Good item for the Technical Committee to review. The motor bracket is not currently listed in the class rules as an "optional" item that would count toward the boat's weight (Rules C.5.1(a) and C.4.2(b)). It therefore must be removed similar to other excluded items such as stereo, navigational equipment, toolboxes, etc.

TC needs to add this item, particularly if new boats come with factory-installed mounts. Anyone who has installed one knows what a pain it would be to remove it for weighing the boat.

The class should not worry about optional items added forward or aft of the positions that lead is added into to hull. There is no advantage to placing weight on the boat ends in the form of motor mounts.

Besides, if I am reading the thread correctly if the Class builder is providing motor mounts, is it not by defacto approved as a stock item?

The issue here is whether or not the weight of the motor mount is part of the measured hull weight. It seems unfair to remove it when determining how much lead needs to be added to meet the class minimum weight.

Chris,
That's my point. A motor mount should be included as part of the weight of the boat. One should be able to reduce the lead in a the boat when adding the motor mount.

For those who are interested, I copied this from the JBoat web page on the standard equipment sold with a new J/80:
• Hall Spars lightweight motor mounts installed through molded mount location in transom to accommodate 3-4 hp engines.
I also copied this from the March 2004 J/80 Class Rules:
"The boat in "builders weight" condition shall not be less than 1,425kg or more than 1,450kg on
certified scales. This weight shall include hull, keel, rudder, deck, all specified mouldings and
structures, all fixed standard and optional fittings, spars, standing and running rigging and hardware that is part of the standard building specifications by the builder. Builders weight excludes battery, sails, cushions, portable equipment and non-factory installed hardware."
