Water Penetration

Interesting comment from J-105 site: "Rich Moody, TPI Customer Service Rep, notes that there is greater danger of water penetration into the core from the inside of the hull than from the outside. Thus it is important to keep water out and to keep any screw holes from the inside well caulked. He recommends painting the bilge with airdry gelcoat after about five seasons of use."

Has anyone else had water in the small storage areas under the quarter berths? After a recent heavy-heeling day I noticed that everything stored in these areas was soaked.

Does the bilge connect to these areas and if there is enough water in the bilge and the heeling is sufficient, can water migrate to the storage areas?

Will it drain back to the bilge once the boat is level?

I can't imagine any other way that water could get to those compartments. Any thoughts on the subject?

Yes, the bilge is connected to the compartments and water will migrate when the boat heels. Pump out your bilge before sailing to prevent this.

Another way that water can get into those compartments is from above, particularly when you douse a wet spinnaker. Our spin bag retracts to the port side and we typically get water on that side during rainy and/or heavy weather sailing. I have installed smaller storage compartments into the cavities. The boxes are about the size of the opening and about four feet deep. The starboard side stays pretty dry but I only store stuff that can get wet in the port side.

After some particuarly wet sailing in the Solent I found a significant amount of water in the bow "flotation" compartment. Up to this point I had imagined that this front compartment was watertight. Is this normal? Is this a problem?

Check your bowsprit seal....when I replaced mine, I got a lot less water in that compartment. Also check the seal of the bow pulpit around the base. Take a hose and blast the area, while someone down below looks for where it is coming in. Good Luck.

I believe you will have to make your own. I used the old one as a pattern and cut one out of a rubber car floor mat. I fabricated a fibreglass flange and screwed the flange nad rubber car mat seal to the sprit bossing. Surprisingly, it works quite well and is easy and cheap to replace.

Bowsprit seals can be purchased directly from TPI (J80 Builder). They cost less than $10.00. Ask for Hank 401-245-1200.

I got a new J80 from J composite / France but when I first sailed the boat I had a lot of water (80 liters in 1 hour) inside coming from the bowsprit. Ideas are welcome. Thank you.

I don't know if it will work based on the diameter of the J80 spinnaker pole, but in the Melges 24 class, folks took a "stadium" cup (i.e. 16oz plastic cup) slid it on to the end of the spinnaker pole inside the tack block so that the open end of the cup faces the pole gasket. When the pole is retracted, the open end of the cup covered the outside of the gasket and greatly reduced (not eliminated) the amount of water that came in through the pole and gasket. I believe that the J80 pole is larger in diameter, so you might be able to accomplish the same effect with a larger cup.

Water in the very frount area and forward flotation area can come from the nav lights and bow pulpit. would not think the sprit would put water in those places. A leaky sprit should put it on the top of the V berth and into the bildge.

that based on my experiences with my old J/80 Mostly Harmless. Had a water problem forward that went away when I rebedded the nav lights and took the bow pulpit off and cleaned off all the oil on the metal and such and rebedded with something along the line of sikaflex 231 or 3M 4200.
