Don't forget the jack lines and harness when your sailing single handed.

Good point Sam. On the lake there are usually other boats around and shore is usually at best a mile away - nevertheless I always wear a lifejacket. Offshore jacklines would be prudent.

When I read about fixing the tiller with the backstay-lines I was quite astonished. I do a lot of single-handed sailing at the North Sea. Heavy commercial shipping requires an autopilot. I use an Autohelm 2000plus. With this device I can fly the kite up to 9 knots boat-speed without any problems. In stronger winds or with higher waves you need an autopilot with a gyroscope, which is rather expencive.
Every season I sail about 3.000nm with my J80 GER2, I wouldn't like to miss the auto-pilot.
