SPAMMING the Forum

On July 16 & 17, 2006 the Forum was spammed by robots that posted to almost every thread. The robots are getting more sophisticated in that they use a different IP address for every post and vary the number of posts and the text of posts making it difficult or impossible to remove the spam through an automated process. Several thousand posts had to be removed manually, which tooks quite a bit of time.

What is being done to reduce the likelihood of this happening in the future?

1. We've upgraded the Discus software and installed the anti-spam features. In particular, there is a database of IPs addresses that the bots use, which is interrogated whenever posts are made.

2. We've "archived" the threads that are old so that there are fewer open threads to post to. Keyword searches will still pick up the valuable information in these new "archived" topics.

3. We've deleted the posts on Events & Scheduling that are no longer relevant. Posts to this topic will not be archived.

4. We'll monitor security developments to make sure that the discussion board tries to stay a step ahead of the bad guys.

Sorry for any inconvenience you may have experienced -- particluarly if you were signed up to receive e-mail whenever a post was made to the Forum. If it is any consolation, it was pretty inconvenient for us as well.

We've experienced more spamming recently and will address the problem. In the meantime, we would appreciate it if you did not report the spam to your ISP (especially AOL). By doing this you do not punish the spammer, you punish us, and we get blacklisted instead of the spammer. If you do not want to receive notification of posts, voluntarily take yourself off the notification list.
