Congratulations
to Kerry Klingler and his crew on Lifted on their win at the 2006 East Coast
Championships. We also have to thank
Kerry for both organizing the move of the regatta from Annapolis and for
hosting such a great party at his house.
In addition, major thanks go out to the people at American Yacht Club
for allowing us to race with them at the last minute and also for allowing us
the use of their facilities. Both the
organizers and staff are to be commended on a great job.
Unfortunately,
the wind did not cooperate as much as the Yacht Club did but we were able to
get off 5 races in two days. The first
race on Saturday saw steady breeze for the entire race, a rare condition for
the regatta. Race 2 saw much lighter
conditions and the fleet split in two.
Those going to the right ended up getting lifted to the top mark and had
a huge advantage while those on the left set the chutes just to get to the
mark. Once at the mark, the chutes were
tacked and the tight reach to the finish began. Race three had steady breeze for 3 out of the 4 legs. As the leaders rounded the top mark for the
second time, the breeze began to die down then totally shut off. Everyone took different approached towards
getting to the finish line but it was those boats who found the tiny trickles
of wind who did well. Almost all the
boats finished right on top of each other.
Sunday
brought bright sunshine and not much wind.
There was a lot of floating and waiting but finally, the race committee
was able to get two races off. There
was more breeze in the first race than the second but at least it never totally
shut off. It was a matter of who could
stay in the breeze the longest for these two races.
It
turned out to be a great event both on and off the water. It was a very promising note that the class
stuck together when the Annapolis NOODs fell apart on us. We ended up getting almost all the registered
boats to change venues and we even gained one who was not registered.
Once
again, congratulations and thanks to Kerry and thank you all for showing
up. Next stop on the East Coast is Sag
Harbor in the beginning of June. Hope
to see everyone there as well as maybe some new faces.
