Rusty Nelson and the crew of “Wild Card” won the San Diego NOOD
Regatta in convincing fashion March 17-18 in the 10 boat J/80 fleet.
The first day of racing saw Northwest
breezes of 8-12 knots. Rusty and crew, Kerry Klinger, played the shifts right
and won the first two races of the day. Curt Johnson and the “Avet” team won
the third race of the day to stay within a point of “Wild Card.”
Day two of the regatta resulted in
completely different conditions. 3-6 knots from the South and plenty of San Diego’s legendary kelp. The
“Wild Card” team won in convincing fashion with two bullets through good
downwind speed and tactics. Curt Johnson and “Avet” held on for second and
Gregg Kelly on “Merkin” improved from the first day to take third.
Thanks goes to Rusty and Bob Hayward
of “Blue Jay” for offering a variety of beverages to fleet members on Saturday
night in Rusty’s upgraded hotel suite.
