Southern California Circuit Stop #1.

The first event in the J/80 Southern California Circuit, the SCYA Mid-Winters, took place Feb. 17-18. For those not familiar with the event, The SCYA Mid-Winters is in its 78th year and boasts more than 600 boats racing in more than 30 venues up an down the coast of Southern California. The J/80 class was hosted by the California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey.

Saturday, the fleet was greeted with 75 degree temperatures and clear skies. The wind conditions, however were “challenging.”  The breeze ranged from 4 to 10 kts. and shifted as much as 70 degrees from the Southwest to the Northwest. The CYC race committee did an excellent job keeping up with the shifts and changed courses or postponed starts at the last minute if the wind shifted direction. In the first race, Bob Hayward and his team on “Blue Jay” took advantage of a wind-line on the left side of the first beat to take the victory. The wind for races two and three on Saturday also offered shifty and “puffy” conditions. Curt Johnson and the “Avet” team took two firsts to finish the day followed by Wes Huston and “DnA” in the second race and Larry Travis sailing “Athena” in the third race.

Sunday provided cooler temperatures and wind from the Southeast at 10-15 kts. John Steen and the “Underdog” team found better speed to take two close seconds with the “Avet” team taking another two bullets and the regatta win.

After each day of racing the J/80 fleet enjoyed free beer and appetizers hosted by Cal. Yacht Club. Although not officially scored, the crew of “DnA” won the post-race festivities portion of the regatta.
