Underdog wins So. Cal. Circuit stop #1
John Steen and crew adapted to a wide variety of conditions to win the Southern California Yachting Association Mid-Winters at California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey, CA., Feb. 18-19. Eight J/80s competed in winds that ranged from 6-17 knots.
On day one, after an hour postponement due to light and variable winds, the race committee ran two races when the sea-breeze filled to in to 10 knots. Larry Travis on “Athena” took race one, getting ahead on a wind shift to the left. John Steen and “Underdog” won the second race getting to the right, this time, and staying in the stronger breeze.
Day two began with “Underdog”, “Athena” and Curt Johnson’s “Avet” separated by a single point between first and third. “Underdog” took the first race in 10 knot winds with “Avet” second and “Athena” third. In race two, the wind built to 13-15 knots and “Avet” took the gun in front of “Underdog” and “Athena.” In the third race of the day, the breeze was up to 15-17 knots and “Underdog” displayed superior boat speed and won comfortably in front of Rusty Nelson’s “J-Spot” and “Avet.”
The weekend was marked by some beautiful California weather and fun, close racing. Of course, the free beer and food also made the weekend a good time for all.
